25 Acres, Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh

A test run during the monsoon season on a 25 acre piece of land part of a 300 acre parcel in extremely arid regions of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. We cultivated around 12 varieties of millets and pulses in alley cropping systems for developing future agroforestry and commercial crop cultivation. Holistic Grazing Management trials were also conducted using Cows and low-cost mobile chicken coop’s. From detailed designing of the chicken coop contexualised to the Mirzapur climate, to complete planning of grazing paddocks, SOPs for running a holistically grazed meat enterprise and plan was undertaken.

Although, currently the implementation of the project is in limbo, a lot of detailed research has already been undertaken for the development of a very large landholding in a process which would be similar to a regional development plan for regenerative agriculture and creating climate resilient communities. This included a detailed planting plan along with a 7 year staged implementation plan for enterprise development, a detailed watershed management plan.

Our unconventional approach to the crop trials began with a late seed sowing on August 22nd during the kharif season. Contemplating whether it would merely serve as a cover crop, we embraced an experimental mindset. Tackling the challenge of compacted top soils, we opted for a single tillage at the onset. Fertilization was a one-time affair, exclusively with Jadam Microbial Solution. Intriguingly, our most captivating revelation lay in our hands-off approach to crop management. No weeding, no additional fertilization, and no pest protection – just sowing and harvesting.

Despite sowing 40 days late into the season and adhering to a mere 1/4th of the usual cultivation costs, the outcomes were nothing short of a triumph. Harvests, even for resilient crops like bajra, reached up to 1/3rd, surpassing traditional yields achieved with 4-5 times the cultivation expenses.
